There are few words that so readily transport to the human mind and imagination to a place both grand and mysterious.  And what are those four words? The Garden of Eden. We are first introduced to The Garden of Eden in Genesis chapters two and three.  Let’s read what it reveals about the most amazing location to ever grace the earth.

And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  – Genesis 2: 8-10

And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the Garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.  – Genesis 2:15

And then sin entered the Garden of Eden.

And unto Adam the Lord God said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; – Genesis 3:17

Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the Garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword, which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. – Genesis 3:23-24

The glorious destiny that was the unspoken hope of the Garden of Eden was declared off limits to mankind.  The only light that could now be seen from the Garden was the light of a flaming sword that menacingly turned in every direction to keep unmolested the Garden of Eden in which there was a path to the tree of life. Does Eden still exist somewhere on the earth?  Can we locate the Garden of Eden on a map?

The Apostle Peter filled with the Holy Spirit reports the answer in a stark un-ambiguous revelation.

Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:  Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: – 2 Peter 3:3-6

Commentary

Eden and the mysterious and tantalizing destiny that was associated with it was removed from the earth.  Eden is no more and the garden God planted to the east no longer exists on the earth. The message of hope contained in the name Eden is hidden in the three Pictures and Numbers that are embedded in the Language of the Garden. The Language of the Garden, the language we call Hebrew today, was the only pure sinless thing that remained after the fall of man.  Adam left the Garden with the language that God had given him as a gift.  A gift that would ultimately be taken away from all mankind except for a small remnant when God confused the languages at the tower of Babel.

What does this language reveal about Eden?  The answer is both surprising and hopeful.

To find out what the amazing story these three letters reveal, watch for Part II of the Hebrew word study of Eden.
