Primary Conventional Usage

Adonai is the Hebrew word that means lord. Religious Jews are forbidden to speak or write the name of YHVH and have substituted the Hebrew title Adonai (Lord) for the name YHVH. The English word Lord is a correct translation of the Hebrew word Adonai.  Adonai is NOT a name it is a title.  It should not be confused with the Sacred Name of YHVH which is also translated into the English as the title Lord.  Usually when YHVH is translated Lord in the Englishversions of the Scriptures it is either emboldened or all the letters are capitalized.

Many of the times Adonai is used in Scripture in reference to God it is used as term meant to indicate subordination.  The Name YHVH is used 6820 times in Scripture.  The Title Adonai is used 439 and in almost all those cases it is used a word to identify human princes or to indicate that all the lords of the earth are under the authority of YHVH.

For YHVH your God is God of gods, and YHVH of lords (Adonai), a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:  (Deuteronomy 10:17).

YHVH of Adonai or as it says in English LORD of Lords.

First use of Adonai in Scriptures

Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?  Genesis 18:12

Summary

At the precise time after a sequence of Divinely Ordained events God is going to Deliver His Creation from the curse of Sin and Death.

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:  Hebrew 1:1-3
