Primary Conventional Usage

Isaac is the name of Abraham’s son born of his wife Sarah.  Isaac was the second son of Abraham.  The first born son of Abraham was Ishmael who was born by Hagar the Egyptian bondservant.  Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born and Sarah was in her 90’s.

Abraham brought Isaac his beloved son to the Mount of Moriah to sacrifice him on an altar of wood as YHVH had commanded him.  This was a test from YHVH that was interrupted before Abraham sacrificed Isaac.  God provided a ram whose horns were caught in the thicket as a substitute sacrifice.  This drama was a picture of the coming Messiah who will be sacrificed for the sins of the world.

Isaac was the only one of the three Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac & Jacob) whose name was not changed.  Isaac lived to be 180 years old.

The name ISAAC means “Laughter” or “Will Laugh”.

First use in Scriptures

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.  Genesis 17:19

The Word of God translates this picture with grand precision.

For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth. The Lord did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people: But because the Lord loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.  Deuteronomy 7:6-8

So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.  Matthew 20:16

But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:  1 Corinthians 1:27-28
