There is Something About That Name

(10 Ratings)

A recent news report released the top names for boys and girls born in America last year, recording again the importance parents place on naming their children. Parents employ different methodologies as they labor to select the names for their children, some will name their children after family members, others after famous people, yet others will choose a name from the Bible.

God places great value on names. In CJ Lovik’s second book in the series The Living Word in 3D, he reminds us that the first task given to humanity was for Adam, after giving his wife a name just as God had given Adam his name, to name all of the animals in the garden. As God’s creation began to multiply, just as God gave Adam his name and Adam gave Eve her name, parents and following generations named their children. Many times these names held great significance in current or future events as recorded in the scripture.

One such case was when the Ark of the Covenant was taken in a battle with the Philistines. Eli, the priest of the temple of God, upon receiving the news that not only had his two sons died in the battle but the Ark been taken as well, fainted and when he fell broke his neck and died. When his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, who was with child heard the news, the tragic news cause her to immediately give birth to her child. She gave birth to a boy and named the child Ichabod. The mother said the reason she chose this name was, “The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.”

God sometimes interrupted the custom of the parents naming their children with special names of His own for the new born. Discovering the meaning behind the names of men and women in the Bible often opens new understanding to the events in the Bible.

Having a complete understanding of the meaning of Biblical names provides a greater revelation and insight into God’s word. CJ Lovik’s book series, The Living Word in 3D, provides a powerful resource for the serious Bible student to gain a three-dimensional understanding of how God uses names to reveal Himself to His creation.
